There are many charity shops and reuse projects that welcome donations of furniture, white goods and other household equipment in good condition. Soft furnishings must have fire labels attached (except for antiques). Most also sell items to raise funds.

Edinburgh Furniture Initiative (Refurnish 4 Less) is part of Four Square, a voluntary organisation that helps the homeless. They sell a wide range of used basic household items and appliances and good quality items can also be donated:

Scottish Borders
Berwickshire Furniture Restoration Co Ltd will uplift furniture and household goods for free. They will then be restored and made available to people of limited means who are setting up a home:

Home Basics will uplift furniture, household and white goods, and donate to those in need. Sales of surplus stock take place in the depots one day during the week and also on Saturday mornings.

Some items of furniture could be repaired rather than having to buy something new. For local contacts check the Yellow Pages under 'furniture repair and restoration' or 'upholsterers' or see W: www.yell.com.
Disposal:
For furniture that cannot be reused, call your local council for the special uplift service. See Local Councils. There is likely to be a charge for this service. Or take to your local Community Recycling Centres for disposal. See COMMUNITY RECYCLING CENTRES.
