Mattresses in good condition are accepted by some charities and reuse projects. Please check with your local shop or project: See Charity Shops In Edinburgh; See Charity Shops in East Lothian; See Charity Shops in Midlothian; See Charity Shops in the Scottish Borders; See Charity Shops in West Lothian.
In West Lothian, old mattresses can be taken to any of the six Community Recycling Centres (See Community Recycling Centres West Lothian). They are also recycled through the bulky uplift collection (See Local Councils). If mattresses are being presented for collection, they should be kept as dry as possible. All the mattresses collected are recycled by FEAT Enterprises, including those collected from the Community Recycling Centres. Some are reused if they are in very good condition but most are recycled. The mattresses are stripped down and separated into the main component materials (spring steel, polyurethane foam, wood and fabric). Materials are then sorted for packaging and transportation to the end users.
